What are you tolerating in your life?

A lady gazes at the landscape, deep in thought, contemplating what she is tolerating in her life.

“In life, you get what you tolerate.”— Mike Ditka

Along my career, I have somehow always struggled with the term “perfectionism”. I’ve always understood it as an unattainable ideal. But lately, I’ve found myself pondering the mindset of those who “Chase Perfection to Catch Excellence.” What am I missing by not striving for perfection? 🤨

It’s akin to the story of the dog on the nail – moaning because he was laying on the nail but it wasn’t hurting him bad enough for him to move. He was probably focusing on a certain comfort over the discomfort caused by the nail though it was a matter of moving slightly aside to even get a higher comfort!! (Story by Les Brown: https://lnkd.in/dcwy2mQ4 )
Perhaps, like that dog, I’ve prioritized short-term comfort over the discomfort of change, unaware that a simple shift could bring greater ease. Maybe by fear to lose the comfort already earned??

Indeed, throughout my career, I’ve encountered my fair share of “nails”—difficult conversations avoided, underperformance overlooked, misbehaviors ignored 🙈🙈. As an HR professional, I see how these tolerances can fester, hindering growth and potential.
In businesses, similar avoidances occur—long and unproductive meetings, tensions between colleagues, overlooked inefficiencies, or cultural misalignments. These tolerances, left unchecked, can lead to long-term harm.
While I’m not advocating for perfectionism, I recognize the merit in addressing these avoidances head-on. I am a firm believer of one step at a time, one step in a different direction, changes the destination, isn’t?

So, I invite you to reflect: What are you tolerating in your business? In your life?
Let’s break free from avoidance and embrace transformation—one step at a time. 🌟

Wow, I’ve always avoided stepping out of my comfort zone, sticking to what I already know, and limiting myself. I’ve often convinced myself that this isn’t my passion or the career I want to pursue. Your article has been an eye-opener for me, highlighting that stepping out of my comfort zone is a game-changer. Thank you for sharing these insightful thoughts.
